If the multimeter reading is above 30 ohms, then the outlet is not working properly and will need to be replaced. ![]() If the multimeter reading is between 0 and 30 ohms, then the outlet is working properly. Once the multimeter is set to this setting, you will need to touch the probes to the two screws on the outlet. In order to check a dryer outlet with a multimeter, you will need to set the multimeter to the “resistance” or “ohms” setting. What do I set my multimeter to check a dryer outlet? If that doesn’t work, you may need to hire an electrician to check the outlet. If the appliance doesn’t work, try resetting the circuit breaker or replacing the fuse. First, plug a lamp or other small appliance into the outlet to see if it turns on. If you’re not sure whether your dryer outlet is working, there are a few ways you can test it. If the dryer operates normally, then the outlet is providing the proper amount of powerĬredit: How do you test if a dryer outlet is working?.Plug your dryer into the outlet and turn it on.If the meter registers a continuity reading, then the outlet is functional.Place one lead on the hot terminal and the other on the neutral terminal. ![]() Use a multimeter to test the outlet for continuity.Look for cracks, breaks, or loose connections.Inspect the outlet for any signs of damage. Most dryers operate on 240 volts, so you will need a 30 amp outlet that can provide this amount of power. If it doesn’t, there may be a problem with the outlet. Then, attach the voltmeter to the black and red wires on the outlet. To begin, first make sure that the circuit breaker is turned off. You’ll also need a 30 amp circuit breaker, and a dryer cord. The heater is made in the USA, runs very quiet, is controlled by a thermostat and easily heats a 20 x 20 garage with 10 foot ceilings. If you need to test a 30 amp dryer outlet, there are a few things you’ll need. I bought the "King 5000-Watt Electric Garage Heater with Thermostat" and the 4 wire dryer cord for just around $200.00 and was able to save at least that much on labor by doing the work myself. The white cord wire I capped with a wire nut and a wrap of electrical tape after cutting the copper flush with the wire's insulation and tucked it safely out of the way. The black plug wire went to the heater's L1 and the red wire went to the L2 lug. The green plug wire I tied to the heater's internal ground wire with a wire nut. The dryer cord even came with a metal clamp used to secure the wire to the rear panel of the heater. The heater is made to be wired directly so any 220 volt cord or plug type can be used as long as the wire is 10 gauge or sized to handle the 22 amp load. I'm happy to say I've got a heated garage brew room now and it really feels good doing stuff out there without having to be all bundled up. The store had only one 220 volt 5,000 watt wall mounted heater left, it was on display and I was able to buy it for 10% off. I ended up buying a 4 wire electric dryer cord that is compatible with my existing 220 volt wall outlet. ![]() Just wanted to provide my latest update since yesterday.
